Most of the movers provide moving estimate which helps you to anticipate the cost involved in your move. You must get written moving estimates from at least three different movers to compare their prices and services. But moving estimates are not bills and the actual charges on your bill are mainly based on the weight of your possessions, the distance you move and additional services you avail.

When estimation is being made, assist the movers to calculate the cost of your move to nearest accuracy by showing them all the items you want to move. Get a clear picture of the packing requirements and other services you want to avail. If you omit anything in estimate, it will be later added to your final cost.

Normally, non-binding and binding moving estimates are used by all movers. Some movers use Not-To-Exceed moving estimates which are also referred as Guaranteed Price or Price Protection estimates.

In non-binding moving estimates, the mover will survey the items and estimate the cost. The final cost is determined only after the shipment is weighed. At the time of delivery, you have to pay the estimated cost, plus 10%. If you avail additional services, you need to pay for the same, 30 days after the shipment is delivered. In binding moving estimates, you may have to pay the price decided at the time of estimation, irrespective of the shipment weights. If you avail additional services which are not listed in the estimate, you need to pay for the same, 30 days after the shipment is delivered. In Not-To-Exceed moving estimates, the cost is estimated based on a binding moving quote or on actual cost, whichever is minimum. You will be paying for the maximum amount which alternates with the tariff changes if any based on the actual weight of the shipment. Not-To-Exceed is the best estimate for long distance moves as it depends on the complete list of items you move. But you will be charged more if you bring more items on the moving day. But the advantage is that if the final bill is lesser than the estimate, you can pay the lower price.

Whatever may be the type of estimate, one important thing you must ensure is about insurance. The movers are supposed to provide insurance coverage for your goods. Find the best coverage as only the damage visible is insured and not the internal problems caused to the electronic goods during transportation.
