Moving to Arizona

Arizona is a state full of striking geological features. The most famous of these is the Grand Canyon, one of the seven natural wonders of the world. This spectacular canyon was carved out over millions of years by the Colorado River, which winds through the northwest corner of the state. The canyon draws about five million visitors every year and is one of the most popular sights in the world. Arizona has many other natural wonders in addition to the Grand Canyon. A 4000-foot-wide bowl in the plains of northern Arizona marks the site of a prehistoric meteorite impact. Not far away, huge stone logs dot the landscape, the petrified remains of an ancient forest. The area north of the Petrified Forest is known as the Painted Desert because of its beautifully-colored hills. Also in northern Arizona are the red rock formations of Sedona, bright red-orange sandstone hills that have been carved into strange shapes by erosion from wind and water.

Although much of Arizona is unspoiled park land, Arizona’s two largest cities, Phoenix and Tucson, are among the most populous cities in the US. Phoenix is a large, cosmopolitan city that serves as headquarters to twelve Fortune 500 and Fortune 1000 companies. Major industries include computer chips, internet hosting, electronics, and aeronautical engineering. Tucson is a smaller city built up around the state university. Tucson is home to variety of high-tech industries, including computer manufacturers, defense contractors, and biomedical firms.

Tourism and sports are major industries in Arizona, thanks to its warm, dry climate and nearly year-round sunshine. Arizona hosts baseball spring training, auto racing events, and professional golf events. Arizona also has a growing arts and cultural scene. In addition to museums and concerts in the metropolitan areas, there is a vibrant arts and crafts community both within outside the cities. Local artists produce everything from traditional textiles and pottery to modern art glasswork and sculpture.

Some facts about Arizona:
  • The name Arizona is believed to come from a Native American name meaning “small spring.”
  • Arizona is the youngest state in the continental United States; only Alaska and Hawaii became states more recently.

  • Northeastern Arizona is part of the Navajo Nation, a Native American homeland about the size of West Virginia.
  • Phoenix, Arizona is the fourth largest city in the United States.
  • The Arizona state flower is the saguaro blossom.
Arizona offers cosmopolitan cities, arts, and leisure alongside some of the country’s most beautiful unspoiled natural scenery.
