The whole state is located within the Eastern Time zone. It covers almost 55,000 square miles. The state is 285 miles wide and 330 miles long. 13 percent of the state consists of water.
The highest point in the state is located at Mount Marcy. This point sits at just over five thousand feet. The average elevation for the state is one thousand feet, and the lowest point in the state is found at the Atlantic Ocean, which sits at sea level.
English is a common language in the area, but many other languages are spoken as well. Because this state is one of the gateways to the United States, a variety of different languages can be heard on a daily basis.
The state was the 11th state to join the Union. It was signed into law on July 26th, 1788. This was one of the first states to become part of the new country.
